Great Read, Insights Into Some of Our Bad Choices

This books is a must read for people in general and leaders in particular. Ori and Rom Brafman explain the "Irresistible Pull of Irrational Behavior," the subtitle of the book. I think the authors really mean "not usually resisted," for the conclusion of the book illustrates cases where people have resisted these irrational pulls.

Irrational decisions based upon loss avoidance (driving dangerously when one is late, for example) or commitment when commitment is no longer warranted are two cases in point, as is paradigm blindness in its various incarnations.

The authors seem confused about the typical American perspective of our willingness to suffer loss rather than be treated unfairly. The authors apparently embrace a different value system than do most Yanks. After all, debate over fairness issues is how America began, did it not? (At least in the eyes of most Americans; the Brits, I am sure, have a different take). Whether that is irrational or not can be debated. Some might argue that insisting on fairness -- even if it involves personal loss -- makes for a better society and creates long-term benefits. So I disagree with them on that point. They need to understand that this is not an irrational vs. rational issue, but a values matter.

This is an EXCELLENT BOOK and will not only help you understand the nature of the irrational choices others make (in some instances; some people, for example, are just fickle), but it will help readers pick up their own irrationalities (it showed a few to me). Very worthwhile read.

Great read for potential bloggers ...

I chose this book because I'm looking into launching my own blog. However, it's something I have little experience with. This book is great for giving insight and giving you a lot to think about. I can't speak for experienced bloggers, but for those in my position, it's a great read!

Great book for the MBA course!

Yes, I used this book to teach "Consumer Behavior" class, at the MBA level.

The book came with 20 chapters, covering American society values, demographics, subcultures, families, households, group influences, perception, learning, memory, products, motivation, personality, emotion, self-concept, lifestyle, situational influences, decision process, problem recognition, information search, alternative evaluation and selection, outlet selection and purchase, post-purchase process, customer satisfaction and commitment, organizational buyer behavior, and marketing regulation.

Each chapter has video cases, consumer insights, and practical examples. I added many of my real-life stories. Overall, students loved this book and the class was very successful.

The CD-ROM data disk came with the book. It was full of additional information.

awful book

I ordered the book for a course and was sorely disappointed. The book was unorganized, poorly written and the concepts were not new.

We pay a price for civilization.

Superlative, compact, masterpiece. Many reviews before mine have noted the book and the movie's qualities and I'll just second those.

The important, basic, theme that the work explores is the small price that we pay for the security that civilization (western civ, in particular) provides us. The book is pretty subtle in bringing this idea to the fore (for one example, Ed lusts for a girl but doesn't act upon his lust because he's civilized). The movie is less subtle (having less time to develop character back story's) and hits us over the head with the idea by portraying the church on wheels scene toward the end of the movie.

BTW, if it hasn't been mentioned, James Dickey portrays the sheriff in the movie.

Too little science; too much opinion

This is an intellectually lazy book that buries a few mildly interesing studies under endless anecdotes, opinion and speculation. He gives very little detail of the studies (e.g. number of participants, mean vs median results) so it's hard to determine if the results he has are statistically significant or their precise meaning. For example, when given an opportunity to cheat, the average score of a group of students goes up - it would have been good to know if this was the result of one or two students cheating a lot or most of the students cheating a little (his opinion). Many of the studies' results could have other equally reasonable explanations and, rather than explore each of them, the author simply picks the explanation that fits with his rather tranparent social and political views. For example, he cites a study where his students who he asked to pay to listen to him read poetry offered to pay him when he asked again whereas when he offered to pay students to listen to his poerty they wanted to be paid to listen again. He attributes this to subconcious anchoring but another explanation is these students are conciously attempting to meet what they think their teacher's expectations are.

His thought process is also sloppy, Because humans are not entirely rational in determining their needs he concludes that the free market cannot be trusted and therefore the government must play a significant regulatory role. He cites the water and electricity industries as examples which seems silly - the need for regulation in these industries is because they are natural monopolies of an essential service, not because people are too irrational to decide how much electricity they need.

The author is also astonishly full of himself - he belives he's discovered the proper way for a group to order dinner, for companies to offer credit cards, how to lose weight, how to control lobbyists or how to solve the subprime mortgage problem. Each of his proposals raises a number of obvious questions which he makes no effort to present or answer. He suffers from an arrogance common to university professors who think they can run the world better based on studies that ask 18 year old volunteers to answer questions for a dime apiece.

A Timeless Classic

I picked this book up from my bookcase, where apparently, I had bought it sometime ago when it was recommended to me by someone. I was in between books and thought for Christmas, I needed a classic to read and this book is way better than I ever expected. It is a classic for the ages and the language is absolutely beautiful, heart-wrenching and lyrical. What makes this book even more beautiful is that I can relate to it even today, though I know little of South Africa and its history. Unfortunately, I see a lot of similarities between South Africa and our own history.

The back of the book simply states that this book is about a man and his son in the depths of South Africa. Do not be misled by that simplest of blurbs. This book is about a lot more than a complicated father-son relationship. It is about the deep love the natives have for their country, the deep divide between the minority (the whites that have come to power) and the natives, and the unsettling of the tribes now that the land can no longer provide for them. It is a complicated book about a lot of issues that comes to head when the minister's son killed a white man. It gets even more interesting when the white man's father (Jarvis) finds in his heart the ability to listen to what his son was trying to do all those years. It turned out that Jarvis' son was a social worker in the highest sense of the word. He was trying to reconcile the divide between the natives and the uprooting of their tribal customs and trying to bring about the differences. The minister, Stephen Kumalo, went to Johannesburg to look for his son, but only was he too late to save his son.

Paton touched upon so much in this tiny book and handles all the difficult subjects well. One could feel the anguish of Kumalo when he finds his son and hears his sentence of death. One could feel the pain of a man who is called to attend to his son because his son was murdered and that he knew his son's murderer's father. Interwoven throughout the men's pain and grief, are stories of a land that is now rendered apart by two different races.

One cannot just pick this book up and read it without being affected. This book is one of those that will haunt you long after the last page has been turned. It is a book about love, hatred, indifference and greed but also of hope and promises. It is rich in details and it is one of my absolute favorite books to recommend for others to read. It really is a must-read for all serious readers because it will touch upon your heart.

The Paradox of Choice by Barry Schwartz video book review

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RE58HB0CEZQWN This is a video book review of The Paradox of Choice by Barry Schwartz from Eric Pratum, Associate Director of Digital Strategy & Analysis.

It was a lot less directly applicable to nonprofit marketing than I thought it would be. That being said, I believe there is a lot of valuable information in the book for nonprofit marketers. I would just recommend it as a secondary or tertiary book choice because I believe there are more applicable books that one could start with.

Advertising Hi-Jinx

Some very fine thoughts on the advertising and creative marketing business. Might have been a little bit better if the author weren't trying to be so "cute" as well as informative. I was looking for a little more serious introspection and the sort of academic guidance I would give my advertising design students. Nonetheless, it's quite readbale and provides some wickedly irreverent insights to a crazy business.
