some good, some badSTORYTELLER is a collection of short stories rooted in Native American culture written by Leslie Marmon Silko. The first thing that strikes me about STORYTELLER is the way the book is formatted. Normally, the reader shouldn't pay attention to it; it generally has ntohing to do with the book. However, in STORYTELLER, it is a signal to the audience that this collection of writings is going to be personal, and based on the importance of oral tradition. The text flows around the page as if it was spoken word. Intimate family pictures compliment various stories for a very personal feeling......unfortunately, many of the stories didn't live up to my expectations. While some stories, like the title story, were interesting, many were too vague to me, as a cultural outsider, to understand. I wasn't really connected with Tony and his friend in the story of the oppressive state trooper, after they start to believe he is an evil spirit. I start to look at it in an overly critical way because I wouldn't say the officer is possessed, I would reason that he's simply racist. This is definitely geared toward those interested in Native American cultural studies, but not necessarily appealing to the general public. Read more...

Don't You Wish You Knew How to Destroy Your Client's Credibility in a Few Simple Steps!Maria Veloso's Web Copy That Sells has some good information but often times ends up discrediting herself when she gives examples of her own work as you will see for yourself when you read this review.
She'll explain some concepts of copywriting and then she will bring up her work for things like "the one minute cure" --and ebook claiming to cure most diseases in one minute. now as a serious marketer, When she's touting a headline she wrote that says "Simple Formula Has Been Scientifically Proven to Cure Cancer and Virtually All Diseases" how am i supposed to take this seriously and apply this to my own work when she's showing examples of websites and products that appear to be scams specifically aimed at people with terminal diseases desperate for some hope?
Considering she spends some time talking about how your copy has to have credibility, how can she not realize her book loses credibility with such examples of her work? it seems her own work is usually done for these websites offering get rich schemes, low end marketing programs aimed at the internet bottom feeders and false miracle cures. If i was her i would be a bit concerned that the Federal Trade Commission would be reading it.
She will suggests things like making fake blogs posts, websites that masquerade as science journals and all those types of bottom feeder trickery. I understand that these methods probably work for the type of shady businesses she has worked for but it doesn't work for solid legitimate businesses. A real medicine, medical equipment or health supplement can't risk their reputations using such questionable (and i would say unethical and possibly even illegal) devices.
This is not to say that she doesn't have some good advice for web copywriting newbies, but excuse me, copywriting giants like John Caples and Joe Sugarman would not touch this stuff. those guys actually had to sell real things to real people not one minute cure to cancer victims, so it's so much easier for me to find them credible and take their advice. Ms Veloso just leaves me feeling a bit dirty.
It's through the work of people like her that our web surfing experience suffers and it has become so difficult to find good information.
>>If you are interested in selling information packages and ebooks of questionable value, this book might be for you.
>>if you are writing copy for shady businesses that have no reputation to worry about this book might be for you.
>>if you think the best way to sell is to use questionable tactics and trickery this book might be for you.
if you are interested in selling physical objects or copywriting for any company that can't afford to throw their reputation in the trash, i would suggest you forget about this book and instead learn from credible and successful direct marketing giants like Drayton Bird, Joe Sugarman, John Caples, Lester Wunderman and adapt their techniques for the web. | an excellent resource, even if a little datedHas sampling always been a black box for you? You're intimidated by the complexity of designing a quality questionnaire? You're wondering about the difference between a mail versus phone versus face-to-face survey? This book clearly is for you -- and even if you have no particular survey needs right now, it will help you understand how surveys, so important in so many settings today, actually get done.
This is the single best book to introduce surveys in simple, non-technical, commonsense language that I have come across. I keep recommending it to whomever is interested in understanding how surveys work. In our organization, we've done multiple complex surveys, with thousands of respondents, in five languages across three countries, so my appreciation is based on practical experience.
The authors acknowledge that needs are very different, and give detailed instructions of how a survey can be pulled off even with limited budgets. They also tell you when you're better off without the survey.
What about the limitations? A couple of passages could have been edited critically, and could be even clearer, or with slightly more compelling examples. Also, understandably, the book primarily centers on the American experience. As other reviewers point out, the book does not yet take account of the potential (and the limitations) of Internet surveys, but once you understand the principles of the other types of survey work, you can figure this out for yourself.
It's very encouraging to see that professionals can make topics so accessible. Read more...

great guide on how to use facebook, marketing value absolutely zeroBought this book because it promises it will teach you a thing or two about Facebook Marketing, soon i realized this book was written for those who have spend the last 5 years on the bottom of the ocean or any other place without no access to the internet.
The whole book is a collection of screenshots on how to setup a facebook account, how to create a page, how to post something, how to share a picture, etc. all basic stuff which is pretty straight forward and has nothing to do with marketing.
In fact he doesn't touch marketing at all in this book apart from how to setup an add campaign and create a group.
The real life examples aren't real life examples. screenshots of blank reports, what will it tell us?
I mean, why spent an entire chapter on facebook's marketplace if you mention already in the first paragraph that this can not be used for any commercial messages, then why bother? its only useful if you having a personal garage sale.
Its obvious this book is written by a computer geek, who is not a professional marketer. Its written for people who don't know anything about facebook and have no clue what online marketing is. It is certainly not for a marketing professionals. I would be surprised if they would take something away from this book. Therefore wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who is looking for facebook marketing tricks, pretty sure there are better books out there written by people who actually ran a marketing campaign or two on Facebook.
