The commerce of seductionWhat influences our brand preference and decisions of what to buy? This is the question Martin Lindstrom answers in his book //Brand Sense: Sensory Secrets Behind the Stuff We Buy//. Lindstrom says that we find connection--even affirmation--in some brands because brands appeal to our different senses. Most brands have traditionally been marketed by appealing to one of our senses: sight. This doesn't always work nowadays; brands that focus on only one of our senses are missing the opportunity to capture the loyalty of a bigger audience and market. The way to market a brand is to connect buyers to the brand through other senses--smell, hearing, touch, and taste. In other words, Linstrom asserts that for a brand to succeed today, it must develop its multi-sensory identity.
With the assistance of the research institution (Millward Brown) that conducted Lindstrom's worldwide study, //Brand Sense// reveals that we are all slaves to our senses, as we contemplate what to buy. In //Brand Sense//, we see that successful brands today (Abercrombie & Fitch, Apple, Singapore Airlines, Disney, Tiffany's, Mercedes-Benz, Bang & Olufsen, Coca-Cola, Gilette, Starbucks, Nike, and many more) easily seduce all our human senses and eventually seduce our hearts.

| All-in-all a good book on POD book publishing for AmazonAiming at Amazon by Aaron Shepard is a good self-publishing book with the aims at selling on Amazon with the major focuses being on amazon.com as the author is American; though there is much about Amazon.co.uk, .ca and all the others, including the various commands in French, German, Japanese and a nice little appendix section - some of which is found in has other great book which i mention later.
I have the 2.1 version which i bought directly from amazon and part of the book are now out of date, (though nothing major like amazon.co.uk now has Authors Page)but such is technology which moves at rapid pace, know the author refers to his updates on his own website.
If you are into PRINT ON DEMAND selling (POD) and you're aiming at online sells via Amazon then this is the book for you, with lots of detail and info and author and publishers know-how on the things that matter - and what not do do. The author is honest in his little know-how of Kindle, but still offers his advice and points you in the right direction (cheers 4 that : )
I rate this book at 4, simply because i found POD for Profit by the same author (which i read last week) far better as overall POD printing, but as this book suggest, its aiming at Amazon! And does it very well.

Macbeth is Not Shakespeare's Greatest PlayThe Magic Flute is not Mozart's greatest opera. Do you catch my drift? "A Personal Matter" is not Kenzaburo Oe's greatest novel, but it is definitely great. Like many of Dickens's novels, the conclusion seems too deliberately conclusive and somewhat forced. Until the last chapter, however, this is a novel of such searing emotional terror that most readers will be grateful for its unexpected 'hopeful' ending.
"A Personal Matter" is easily Oe's most popular novel, outselling all others by a huge margin both in Japan and outside. That's easy to explain. It's his easiest, most traditional narrative, strictly chronological, told by an 'omniscient' narrator whose omniscience is obviously a mask for the author's projection of his own consciousness into his character named Bird. There is none of Oe's usual deliberate disorder and allusive/elusive obscurity. Plenty of 'shocking' scenes occur, but for Kenzaburo Oe this novel is almost chaste in its depictions of perversity and violence. If the reader is at all acquainted with Oe's other books, or with Oe's true 'personal matter' behind Bird's crisis, it's not hard to intuit that the author wanted and needed a simple structure, distanced from himself, to work out the anguish of his imagination.
Oe's personal matter was the birth of his first child, a son, with severe brain damage. That was in 1963. In 1964, Oe wrote two 'accounts' of his experience, this novel "A Personal Matter" and the short story "Aghwee the Sky Monster". Prior to 1963, most of Oe's writings had focused on the catastrophes of recent Japanese history: the war, the collapse of the Japanese identity along with the de-deification of the Emperor, and the bombing of Hiroshima. Since 1963, Oe's most powerful writing has traced the evolution of his fatherhood, of his intense bonding with his unique son. Oe the man has been a difficult, eruptive, unmanageable person, whose identity-pains inflate to fill any space he enters. From so much pain, so much humanity!
Oe would have been a great writer even if his son had been born in mediocre normalcy. Once in a while, I persuade myself that I can write, if not popularly at least honestly, but Oe's 'honesty' to his own craft as a writer and to his own humanity leaves me gasping in awe. This is the same honesty that I admire in the writings of WG Sebald. Neither Oe nor Sebald is bound to literal veracity, fact for fact, in their obviously autobiographical fictions. Both of them shape their lives imaginatively in their story-telling. But Oe's imagination comes closer to Reality than anyone else's 'swear-on-a-bible' truth. Think of the greatest autobiographers of the past -- Augustine, Rousseau, De Quincey, Lowell -- and get ready for an Oe who spills his guts more courageously than any of them. Read more...

A "foot in the door" for getting started with landing page optimizationYou've built your Web site, but are you still waiting for them to come? In this book, Tim Ash dispels the "If you build it, they will come" myth and provides guidelines for creating well-optimized landing pages. However, buyer beware: this is not a "quick fix" compendium, but rather a discourse on the fundamentals of what the author describes as "this challenging and rewarding field" (xix).
Tapping into an area for which you'll find few but increasingly numerous titles, Ash provides a valuable perspective that more than lives up to the promise that this step-by-step book will teach you the skills necessary to realize greater profit from your landing pages.
After helping you realize that the site that you and others in your organization have worked so hard to create is ugly, Ash encourages you to go a step further in your design. He shows, through a discussion of personality styles and excellent examples, how users judge your landing pages, as well as how your users reach their decisions. While maintaining that your site should adhere to usability standards, he suggests testing discrete factors and tuning pages to include what compels your users to make purchasing decisions.
Very beneficial is Ash's specific roadmap through analyzing the results of your multivariate testing. In this very meaty chapter, he gives you a foundation for performing a statistical analysis of your test results. Those of you who "don't do math" will likely need to read this chapter several times so that you can interpret your tests accurately and ultimately use the results to get buy-in from your development team.
Using the sound principles Ash presents, medium and large businesses with designated departments may be able to move forward with his suggestions right away. The biggest criticism for this work is that small and other businesses with limited financial resources, personnel, and time may find it difficult to do the extensive multivariate testing he recommends. Ash's discussion, in an appendix, of Google Web site Optimizer provides hope that anyone can delve into landing page optimization. Encouraging his readers to go forth and test no matter the method, he writes, "A little bit of something is better [than] a whole lot of nothing" (310). Read more...
