Poor edition

I have to echo the reviews that are critical of this particular edition. The text was obviously composed by scanning some older version of the book with text-converting software. As a result, there are dozens of typos that you'd expect from software of this nature. "Sam" instead of "5am," "Toligraph Poligraphovich" instead of "Poligraph Poligraphovich," "Amoldovich" instead of "Arnoldovich," "fiat" instead of "flat," and even the nonsensical "litde dog" instead of "little dog." There are even asterisks in the place of quotes (i.e., "Quiet!* barked Sharikov.). There are also distracting spaces in between some paragraphs that give the impression of a scene change when no scene change is taking place, while in other places the story seems to shift scenes mid-paragraph. All this sloppiness ends up noticeably detracting from what was otherwise a quick, pleasant read. Not as good as The White Guard or The Master and Margarita, in my opinion, but worth a read--if you get your hands on an edition the editor actually spell-checked.

My view on books by Donald Maas

I am a fan of Donald Maas. Both The Fire In Fiction and Writing the Breakout Novel along with the workbook are on my bookshelf. These books do not teach a student how to write, but they teach someone who knows how to write how to write fiction. I am a collector of many books on writing fiction and have learned something from all of them. All of his books have been helpful to me. He seems to not only to be a gifted writer but also a gifted teacher. I also downloaded his book, "The Career Novelist" from his website. This is a PDF file available for free. Or at least it was when I downloaded it. Whether or not a book is worth the money is a personal decision, but, for me, these books have been worth the money.

"How to" with motivation and depth

This book provides the necessary motivation and support to get started. It is not your typical "how to" in that the author provides personal feedback and examples of how he started while offering third party lessons learned to remain relevant and interesting throughout the book. Some chapters are more basic than others and the author encourages the reader to skip around as appropriate. It is written in a way that allows for the unorderly read in order to get the most out of the book. As a marketing professional, I particularly found the marketing chapters helpful and spot on with the practices that are most universal today. And, again, the Marketing 101 and Advanced Marketing chapters provided appropriate options to keep all readers interested and engaged. Throughout the book, I took notes of what my next steps were to making this a reality and have used those notes and the book as a reference point as I navigate through the process.

Overall, this is a quick read with fantastic advice, guidance and feedback on how to successfully start a consulting business, and then maintain it. I plan to reference this book in the early stages and throughout as a reminder to not get too settled in - and to always market!

I'd give this seven stars if so many were available!

Mr. Hall has done a remarkable job to take a complex subject and break down into easily understood advcie without getting bogged down into cliches or pie-in-the-sky hyperbole.

I have searched far and wide and have found three terrific volumes, but this one is the best of the three and is the only one available on Kindle. Note that I once had a bakery in which one of my signature products was franchised in Oregon using the moniker Billy Bob's Pot Pies. Although the franchise effort was ill-fated, as vice president of the corporation, I learned a good deal along the way.

I also learned why, these days, beginning franchises is all but dead unless you have really deep pockets. I also learned why trying to breaking into supermarkets is even deader than franchising.

Thus, Sell Your Specialty Food is my pick for food producers hoping to break into wholesale food marketing in any format, but readers and researchers also should read Selling My Food To supermarkets; Kitchen To Market; Gourmet To Go - C. William Anderson, aka Travis C. Ward.
