Fascinating bookThis is one of the more fascinating books I've read in quite a while. The author claims that subconscious links created socially" and nationally dictate the meanings of various things. For example, French people form an early Association with alcohol which links drinking with a social family atmosphere, because French children are often given a small amount of wine to drink by their parents at an early age. Americans on the other hand, are not allowed to drink until age 21, and therefore the association that they create is often one of danger and recklessness, because they learn to drink at a much later age and in an underground fashion. For the rest of their lives, they think of alcohol as dangerous, risky, and forbidden. The French view is social and familial. The book is full of examples such as this. For example, Americans link or form code for automobiles as being about freedom, whereas the Germans have a code for automobile which is engineering. This is why for example, American and German auto executives and marketing people cannot see eye to eye.
I found new insights on almost every page of this book. The book is actually quite profound. Many authors try to create the type of insights contained in this book, but they do not have the insight or the knowledge to do so. This book will be of interest to students of anthropology, psychology, international affairs, and marketing of course. Read more...

A book that rewires you for greater success It's not about you, it's about them.
Burg and Mann hammer this point in so much that you'll never look at sales the same way again. Worried about what people will think of you? It's not about you. Wondering if you'll make the sale this time? It's not about you.
This practical manual is designed to change your thinking and your actions towards an agenda of giving to others. Ultimately, this focus on adding value to people is what will sell your prospects on you as a salesperson. Once they believe, like, and trust you, you will have 'opened' the person rather than 'closed' them, and this is what makes a sale possible.
The authors promote a belief in abundance and giving, which is fantastic. I would have liked to have seen more practical ideas on deciding who to trust with different things, but the book does not suffer from lacking this information. Action still gives us the best decision making skills, which is another point the authors deliver well.
Personally, I have held three sales jobs in the past. One was selling life insurance, another was in real estate, and the third is my current position writing and selling my own books. I have read many good books on sales, yet Go Givers Sell More has by far been the most helpful.

Fabulous Copyediting BookThe "Copyeditor's Handbook" is a must-read for the editorial professional. It is an essential guide to grammar, various styles, mechanics, and copyediting and proofreading functions--for which it includes numerous examples, charts, and a glossary of terms. It also provides samples of different copyediting levels with suggestions for estimating fees for light, medium, and heavy editing. Beyond Grammar, a lengthy, but important chapter toward the end of the book, focuses on four broad areas that copyeditors normally face: organization, expository style, bias-free language, and publishing law. As an editor and copyeditor, I use numerous reference books, including "Chicago," "Words into Type," AP, and whatever other style manuals a house publisher dictates. "Copyeditor's Handbook" isn't this type of a style manual, but a handbook that will not only guide newer copyeditors through the editorial process, but will also be an appropriate read for many writers and communication professionals.
This is my second time purchasing this book, because I highlighted my first copy too much and wanted to start fresh. I tend to do that with reference books that are extremely helpful, which is why I know that this one is a good one. Read more...
