| Watch for inaccuracies, grammer mistakes, and bad behaviourMy 6 year old daughter is entranced by these books and admittedly, takes her "places" that no other books or experiances could. My problem with the books (and I do read to her if not review what she reads) is that A: there is some Political correct slant to some of the issues that Jack and Annie find themselves in- such as I just learned that the White Settlers that were looking to settle in the west warred with and drove the Lakota indians from their land... there are two sides to every story. The settlers did not come carrying war gear looking for a fight- many were just famillys looking for a homestead or some farm land -what if they were attacked by some misunderstanding locals?
B. Sometimes the writer trys to tell her stories like she would if she were sitting around a campfire. Incomplete sentences, hanging ideas and grammatical mistakes abound. Ok for Stephen King, who if his readers don't know any better at least are old enough not to be swayed by his writing style and be a bad influence on the readers writing skills. A kid cool series like this should be considered responsible for how future academics might look at the writen word.
C. I have used Jack and Annie's bad behaviours as examples of what not to do. Of course the stories might suffer from Jack and Annie being perfect little angels all the time. I'm still inclined to remind my daughter about the potential consequences of Jack and Annie's actions. ie... Sneaking out of their house at midnight, lieing to their parents about their whereabouts, trusting strangers etc...
Does this mean I will stop reading these wonderful stories to her?... No. Does it mean my wife will accuse me of me of being over critical?... Probably. Perhaps with me and her experincing these books together will be good for opening her up to critical thinking in her own right. Besides who am I to REALLY criticize anybodys ability to write???
